Is There a Halal Pension in Nigeria? Quick Answer
Yes. RSA Fund VI is Nigeria's non-interest pension fund, and any RSA holder can switch in free. Fund VI operates under PenCom's Operational Framework, certified by FRACE (the CBN's council of Islamic finance scholars), and invests only in Shariah-compliant assets: sukuk, screened equities, and non-interest money market placements. Every major PFA offers it in Active and Retiree variants; 2024 Active returns ran from 16.44% to 20.63%.
What Makes a Pension Halal
- • Switch your RSA into Fund VI (non-interest)
- • Equities screened for Shariah compliance
- • Sukuk instead of conventional bonds
- • FRACE-certified framework oversight
What to Avoid
- • Default Funds I-V holding treasury bills and bonds
- • Interest-based deposits and conventional debt
- • Savings plans without disclosed Shariah oversight
- • Non-compliant sectors (conventional banking, alcohol, gambling)

Top Islamic Pension Options
Why It's Halal
Access ARM's Fund VI operates inside the same FRACE-certified PenCom framework that governs every non-interest pension fund: assets may only be invested in instruments compliant with Islamic commercial jurisprudence as approved by FRACE, and the PFA's own FAQ spells out the exclusions, no alcohol, pornography, weaponry, gambling or betting, speculation, or interest-earning ventures. The FAQ also correctly explains the structural separation: Active Fund VI receives contributors from Funds I-III, Retiree Fund VI serves retirees from Fund IV, and Fund III members can move directly to the Retiree variant at retirement. Membership is strictly at the RSA holder's instance with no fee. Like nearly all PFAs, Access ARM does not name an internal Shariah committee for the fund; compliance verification rests on FRACE's framework certification, PenCom supervision and the limited universe of approved instruments (chiefly FGN sukuk, non-interest bank placements and screened equities). The marketing states investments follow Islamic finance principles strictly, and the framework gives that claim regulatory teeth.
Access ARM Pensions
Access ARM Pensions - Non-Interest Fund VI
The non-interest RSA offering from Access ARM Pensions, the PFA formed by the merger of Access Pensions and ARM Pension and one of Nigeria's largest by assets and RSA count. Fund VI is available on request and invests only in eligible non-interest instruments approved by PenCom, split into Active and Retiree variants. Access ARM makes joining unusually easy: an online RSA Fund VI expression-of-interest form starts the switch for both existing members and RSA holders transferring from other PFAs. Full-year 2024 returns were 16.68% for the Active fund and 16.86% for the Retiree fund, the Retiree figure ranking second among all PFAs per Nairametrics' analysis of industry data.

Crown Takaful
Savings Plans (Education, Hajj & Umrah, Nikkah, Target Savings)
Crown's savings-linked family takaful, with real published mechanics: the Education Family Plan takes minimum N10,000 monthly contributions over at least five years into a Participant Fund Account (PFA), pays the accumulated fund plus investment income at maturity, pays sum covered plus PFA balance on death, and allows up to five partial withdrawals of max 50 percent of the PFA after year two at two-year intervals. The Hajj and Umrah Family Takaful combines protection to age 70 with a Participant Investment Fund, minimum N10,000 monthly over at least two years, including a substitution option sending someone else on pilgrimage if the participant is disabled. The Nikkah (Wedding) Plan and Target Savings Family Takaful apply the same architecture to marriage costs and general goals.

The Esusu Plan digitises Nigeria's traditional daily-savings culture: minimum N200 per day, N1,400 per week or N6,000 per month over 2-10 year tenors, with a 1 percent tabarru rate and part or pre-maturity withdrawal allowed. The Marriage Takaful Plan targets wedding costs over 1-5 year terms with part-withdrawal. Noor Takaful
Education Plus Family Takaful

Our Analysis
Every Fund VI operates inside the same FRACE-certified PenCom framework, so the differences come down to allocation policy, returns, and disclosure. In full-year 2024, CrusaderSterling led the Active variant at 20.63% and Trustfund followed at 19.83%, both well above the 16.25% category average; Stanbic IBTC (17.62%), Access ARM (16.68%), and Premium (16.44%) trailed. On the retiree side the order flips: Premium led at 18.54%, ahead of Access ARM (16.86%) and Stanbic IBTC (16.65%).
Allocation policy explains much of the spread. Trustfund publishes a 55% cap on Shariah-compliant variable income while Stanbic IBTC's Active fund permits up to 75%, and the equity-heavier managers led 2024's strong NGX year. That same positioning cuts the other way in a weak year, which is why the Retiree variants are capped at minimal equity exposure.
Disclosure quality also varies: Stanbic IBTC is the only PFA publishing both its fee (1.6809% plus a N100 admin charge) and its contract forms (Wakala Bil-Istithmar for active members, Mudarabah for retirees), while no PFA names an in-house Shariah committee for Fund VI. The takaful savings plans in our table are a different animal: goal-based saving with protection, where Hilal and Crown publish real minimums and the others price at proposal stage.
Retirement is just one of 7 categories. Average score: 63/100.

FRACE-Certified Framework
Fund VI is the only pension fund type in Nigeria whose rules are Shariah-derived end to end: PenCom's Operational Framework is certified by FRACE, the CBN's council of Islamic finance scholars, and restricts assets to sukuk, screened equities, and non-interest placements.
Active and Retiree Variants
Active Fund VI (for contributors from Funds I-III) can hold up to 75% Shariah-compliant variable income at some PFAs; Retiree Fund VI (from Fund IV) is capped at minimal equity exposure for stability in drawdown.
Free to Switch In
Any RSA holder can move into Fund VI at no charge, once every 12 months, by asking their PFA. Membership is strictly opt-in at the RSA holder's instance; your employer's contributions follow you.
Returns Vary by Manager
Full-year 2024 Active Fund VI returns ranged from 16.44% (Premium) to 20.63% (CrusaderSterling) against a 16.25% category average. On the retiree side, Premium led at 18.54%. Manager choice matters inside the same framework.
Prohibited Sectors Excluded
The framework bans alcohol, pornography, weaponry, gambling, speculation, and interest-earning ventures outright. In practice, portfolios are dominated by FGN Ijarah sukuk and screened NGX equities.
Takaful Savings Alternatives
For goals outside the RSA system, family takaful savings plans from Noor, Jaiz, Salam, Hilal, and Crown combine Mudarabah investment accounts with mutual protection, including education, Hajj, and wedding plans.
