A halal salary account in Nigeria is a Qard current account at a non-interest bank: your deposit is a loan to the bank, the bank guarantees it back, pays no interest on it, and in return should not charge you to hold it. Five licensed non-interest banks offer one. Jaiz Bank publishes the most detail, with a Current Account (Qard) that states no account maintenance charges, a personal cheque book, instant debit card issuance and a free monthly e-statement, and a named Jaiz Salary Current Account. Lotus, TAJBank, The Alternative Bank and Summit publish less. The ceiling on every fee is the CBN Guide to Charges effective 1 January 2020, and the account you choose also decides which salary-backed financing you can later apply for. The bank accounts hub covers the full account range.

What makes a salary account halal, and why Qard rather than Mudarabah
A conventional salary account typically pays a small interest credit and charges a current account maintenance fee on debits. A non-interest bank cannot pay interest, so it structures the salary account as Qard: Jaiz's Personal Banking page describes it as the customer giving the bank authority to use the funds on the condition that the deposit is a demand loan to the bank, which guarantees the return of the principal. Summit calls its version Current Account (Qard Hasan) and says deposits are securely held and guaranteed by the bank. You earn nothing on the balance; in exchange, the capital is not at risk and the account should carry no profit-sharing terms.
That is the right structure for salary. Money that arrives on the 25th and leaves over the next thirty days has no business in a Mudarabah investment account, where returns depend on the bank's pool performance and profit is distributed on average balances. Keep the salary in Qard, and sweep what you do not need into a Mudarabah savings account, which the edition's best halal savings accounts comparison ranks separately.
The CBN Guide to Charges: the fee ceilings every bank must respect
The Guide to Charges by Banks, Other Financial and Non-Bank Financial Institutions, effective 1 January 2020, sets the maximum a bank may charge on the items that matter for a salary account. Non-interest banks are bound by it like everyone else. The relevant caps, read from the document on cbn.gov.ng on 13 September 2026, are below. A bank may charge less; none may charge more.
| Charge | CBN cap (Guide to Charges, 1 January 2020) |
|---|---|
| Current account maintenance fee (CAMF) | Negotiable, maximum N1 per mille on customer-induced debits to third parties; not applicable to savings accounts |
| Electronic funds transfer | N10 below N5,000; N25 for N5,001 to N50,000; N50 above N50,000 |
| Naira debit card issuance, replacement or renewal | N1,000 one-off, regardless of card type |
| Naira debit card maintenance | No charge on cards linked to a current account; maximum N50 a quarter on savings-linked cards |
| ATM withdrawal at another bank's machine | N35 after the third withdrawal in the same month |
| Hardware token for internet banking | Cost recovery, maximum N2,500 |
| SMS transaction alerts | Cost recovery on customer-induced transactions; email alerts free |
| Bulk salary payments by employers | Negotiable, maximum N15 per beneficiary, paid by the sender |
Three implications for a salary earner. First, a current account can legally carry a CAMF of up to N1 per N1,000 debited, so a bank that waives it, as Jaiz states it does, is giving up revenue the CBN would allow. Second, a debit card linked to a current account must be free to maintain, so any quarterly card fee on your salary account is a breach to query. Third, the N15-per-beneficiary cap on bulk payments is paid by your employer, so moving your salary to a non-interest bank costs your employer nothing extra.
Five non-interest salary accounts compared
The table records what each bank's own website published on 13 September 2026. Where a cell says not published, the bank's site did not state the figure and you should ask before opening. I did not use third-party fee tables, because the banks themselves are the only source that binds them.
| Bank | Account | Maintenance fee | Debit card | Published perks | USSD |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jaiz Bank | Current Account (Qard); Jaiz Salary Current Account also named | No account maintenance charges | Instant issuance; fee not published | Personal cheque book, free monthly e-statement, cheque and dividend warrant lodgement, internet, mobile and USSD | Yes, code not on page fetched |
| Lotus Bank | Personal current account (no separate salary page) | No account maintenance fees, no hidden charges | Free on account opening | Zero opening balance, instant digital banking access | *5045# |
| TAJBank | Current (Qard) Account | Not published | Not published | MyTaj app; Murabaha auto finance and Ijara service finance for retail customers | Not on page fetched |
| The Alternative Bank | AltCheck current account | No withdrawal charges and no CoTs stated | Debit card included; fee not published | Interest-free emergency access stated; AltRent and EduFund for salary earners | *5050# |
| Summit Bank | Current Account (Qard Hasan) | Not published | Not published | Digital and USSD account opening live since April 2026; Summit Cost-Plus Murabaha for salaried employees | *950# |
On published disclosure the ranking is Jaiz, then The Alternative Bank and Lotus, then Summit and TAJBank. Lotus Bank is explicit about no maintenance fees and a free card but has no salary-specific page. The Alternative Bank is the only one to mention emergency access on the current account itself, and its AltCheck page says no withdrawal charges and no CoTs, which is the old name for the commission on turnover that the CBN's CAMF replaced. TAJBank and Summit Bank name the account and the contract but publish no fee line at all.
Which banks offer a halal salary advance or Qard tied to the account
None of the five publishes a salary advance product with terms. What exists instead are three substitutes. The Alternative Bank's AltCheck description promises interest-free access to emergency funds, which reads like a Qard overdraft, but the page states no limit, fee or eligibility; ask the bank what it means in naira. Lotus lists Qard on its Islamic Banking page as an interest-free loan given out of goodwill, with no terms. And every bank offers service finance, under Ijarah at Lotus, Ijara Service at Jaiz with up to 12 months tenure, Lease (Ijara) Finance at TAJBank, and AltRent and EduFund at The Alternative Bank, which pays your rent, school fees or medical bill directly and lets you repay in fixed instalments. For a salary earner that covers most of the reasons people take a salary advance.
What no non-interest bank will do is credit N200,000 to your account on the 15th to be repaid with a fee on the 25th. That is a loan at interest under another name, and the edition's note on whether loan apps are halal explains why the fee-based versions fail the same test.
How the salary account changes your financing eligibility
This is where the choice of bank has real consequences. Non-interest banks repay financing from cash flow they can see, so salary domiciliation is a stated condition on most retail products. Jaiz is the clearest: its Auto Finance is for salary account holders in public and reputable private organisations, repaid monthly from salary over three to four years with a maximum of 48 months; Household Appliances Finance runs up to 24 months; Home Finance needs a minimum 20% equity contribution over a maximum of 7 years; Ijara Service runs up to 12 months. Every one of those lists salary domiciliation as a feature.
- Jaiz: salary domiciliation is a listed feature on Auto Finance (48 months maximum), Household Appliances Finance (24 months), General Consumer Finance, Home Finance (20% equity, 7 years) and Ijara Service (12 months).
- Lotus: Lotus Rides and Lotus Homes are quoted per customer; the bank publishes no tenor or margin, so the salary account mainly proves the inflows a relationship manager will ask to see.
- TAJBank: Cost Plus (Murabaha) Auto Finance and Lease (Ijara) Finance for school fees, rent and medicals are retail products; the retail page publishes no tenor.
- The Alternative Bank: Home Finance is tailored for confirmed employees of reputable organisations with tenures up to 10 years and a maximum property value of N80 million; AltRent is for salary earners and business owners.
- Summit: Summit Cost-Plus (Murabaha) lists salaried employees among eligible applicants and asks for salary slips as proof of steady income, a proforma invoice and valid ID.
If a car is the next purchase, the car financing hub compares the five banks' auto products side by side; if it is a house, Jaiz's published 20% equity and 7-year cap and AltBank's 10-year tenure and N80m property ceiling are the two sets of figures to plan around, since Lotus, TAJBank and Summit publish none for home finance on the pages I fetched.
How to move your salary to a non-interest bank
Open the account first, then change the payroll record. Lotus's Personal Banking page lists valid identification, proof of address and a passport photograph; Jaiz publishes an online account opening link and an account opening form; Summit and The Alternative Bank both offer digital and USSD onboarding. Expect BVN to be mandatory everywhere. Once you have the new account number, give HR a signed instruction with the bank name, account name and number; most employers apply the change to the next payroll run, so submit it at least a week before the cut-off.
Leave the old account open for one cycle. Standing orders, cooperative deductions and takaful contributions tied to the old account need to be re-pointed, and a direct debit that bounces costs you a stopped-payment charge. The edition's guide to switching to non-interest banking has a checklist for the handover month, and the account comparison tool lets you filter the five banks by the features you need.
Verdict by earner band
Under N200,000 a month: choose on fees and channels, because at this income a N50 transfer fee and a card charge matter more than financing options. Jaiz's stated no-maintenance-charge current account with a free monthly e-statement, or Lotus's zero opening balance and free card with *5045# USSD, are the two with the clearest published terms. Confirm the debit card issuance fee, which the CBN caps at N1,000, before you accept the card.
N200,000 to N1 million a month: choose on what the account gives you access to. Jaiz publishes the most financing terms tied to salary domiciliation, so if a car or appliances on Murabaha are in the next two years, Jaiz is the default. If rent is the pressure point, The Alternative Bank's AltRent is the only published rent product among the five. Above N1 million a month: the salary account is a gateway to home finance, and the two banks that publish home finance figures are Jaiz (20% equity, 7 years) and The Alternative Bank (10 years, N80m ceiling); open the salary account at whichever of those two you intend to approach, and ask Lotus for a written quote on Lotus Homes as the comparison. Frequently asked questions
Which non-interest bank has the best salary account in Nigeria?
On published terms, Jaiz Bank. Its Current Account (Qard) states no account maintenance charges, instant debit card issuance, a personal cheque book and a free monthly e-statement, and Jaiz names a Jaiz Salary Current Account and publishes the tenors of the salary-backed financing it leads to. Lotus and The Alternative Bank are close on fees but publish less; TAJBank and Summit publish no fee line.
Does a halal salary account charge a maintenance fee?
It may, up to the CBN cap of N1 per mille on customer-induced debits, because the Guide to Charges allows a current account maintenance fee. In practice Jaiz states no account maintenance charges on its Qard current account and Lotus states no account maintenance fees on personal accounts. TAJBank and Summit do not publish the figure, so ask before opening, and get the answer in writing.
Can I get a salary advance from a non-interest bank?
Not as a cash advance repaid with a fee, which would be interest. The Alternative Bank's AltCheck account mentions interest-free access to emergency funds without published terms, and Lotus lists a discretionary Qard. The practical substitute is service finance: Jaiz Ijara Service up to 12 months, TAJBank Lease (Ijara) Finance, Lotus Ijarah for Service, and AltRent or EduFund at The Alternative Bank, where the bank pays the bill and you repay in instalments.
What does the CBN Guide to Charges say about debit cards on a salary account?
Issuance, replacement and renewal of a naira debit card are capped at N1,000 one-off regardless of card type. Maintenance on a card linked to a current account must be free; only savings-linked cards may carry a maintenance fee, capped at N50 a quarter. Withdrawals at another bank's ATM are free until the third in a month, then capped at N35 each. The Guide took effect on 1 January 2020.
Does my employer pay more to send my salary to a non-interest bank?
No. The CBN Guide to Charges caps bulk payments such as salaries at a negotiable maximum of N15 per beneficiary, payable by the sender, and that cap applies whichever bank receives the credit. Non-interest banks are on the same payment rails as conventional banks, so a payroll change is an account number change on your employer's bulk file, nothing more.

Should my salary sit in a Qard account or a Mudarabah savings account?
Salary belongs in a Qard current account, where the bank guarantees the principal and you spend freely with no profit terms attached. Mudarabah savings accounts pay a share of the bank's profit on average balances and are built for money you leave alone. Keep one of each: receive salary in Qard, and transfer the part you will not spend within the month into Mudarabah savings at the same bank.
