Most Nigerian banking happens on a phone, and often not a smart one. So the practical question about non-interest banks is less about contracts and more about channels: does the app work, does the USSD string exist, can an agent take a deposit in a market town, and will the card pay for the things you buy online? Here is the channel-by-channel picture across the four established non-interest banks, from our product crawls dated 4 August 2026.

Apps and online banking

All four run full mobile apps and internet banking. The Alternative Bank is the most app-centric by design: AltSave and AltCheck onboard in-app, service runs 24/7, and the bank openly treats branches as secondary, with a referral rewards program (N1,000 per referral) run through the app. Lotus's LOTUS Mobile handles account opening, cardless withdrawals, e-statements and cheque book requests; its internet banking uniquely supports international FX transfers from domiciliary accounts. Jaiz runs JaizMobile Plus alongside internet banking and online account opening, with mobile transfer limits defaulting to N150,000 per day and raisable in-app to N500,000. TAJBank's TAJ Mobile covers all savings tiers with email and SMS alerts, on a bank that holds ISO 27001 (information security) and ISO 22301 (business continuity) certifications.

USSD: banking without data

For feature phones and dead zones, USSD is the channel that matters. Lotus publishes its string prominently: *5045# handles transfers, airtime, data purchases and balance checks with no data connection. Jaiz and TAJBank both run USSD banking across their account ranges (Jaiz lists it on every deposit product; TAJBank includes 24/7 USSD access on all savings tiers). This is not a novelty feature: Tier 1 accounts exist precisely for customers with minimal documentation and often minimal hardware, and a non-interest bank without USSD would exclude the demographic the CBN's inclusion tiers target.

Agents: the biggest quiet differentiator

Branch counts understate reach. TAJBank reported over 13,000 active agents in its 2022 annual report, a network that lets a bank with 50-odd branches take deposits and service customers far beyond them; it is the largest agent operation in the non-interest sector by a wide margin. AltBank runs a named agent model, Wakeel, alongside 34 kiosks and 65 Altboxes, and its Social Mobilization facility explicitly routes financing through market associations, with proceeds domiciled in its Kia-Kia accounts. Jaiz and Lotus rely more on branches (51 and 55 locations respectively). If you live outside the branch map, the agent networks are the difference between a non-interest bank being your bank and being a website.

Cards and online payments

Debit cards are where halal banking meets the global internet, and the details matter. Jaiz publishes the clearest limits: N150,000 daily at ATMs, N2,500,000 at POS, N2,000,000 for web transactions, with chip-and-PIN, two-factor authentication and contactless, and explicit support for global subscriptions including Microsoft, Netflix, Google Play, Spotify, Starlink and Uber. It also issues a Visa Dollar Card against its domiciliary account. TAJBank issues Verve cards across its range, including on the domiciliary account. Lotus issues Verve and Mastercard and adds a virtual dollar card funded from naira at agreed rates, useful for online dollar payments without a domiciliary account. AltBank's card proposition, The Club, pitches international-grade spending. All are debit instruments drawing on your own balance: no credit line, no interest, by construction.

Digital account opening and its limits

Individual accounts open digitally at AltBank and Lotus, and Jaiz runs an online opening portal, but the sector still routes plenty through branches: full KYC verification, card issuance and replacement at Jaiz require a branch visit, TAJBank's payroll account needs a physical employer letter, and domiciliary accounts everywhere carry documentation that resists pure digital onboarding. Summit Bank, the newest entrant, launched on a freshly built ICS BANKS platform with mobile and internet banking from day one, though with Abuja as its only verified physical presence, digital is effectively its whole distribution.

The verdict by user type

  • Smartphone-first, branch-never: The Alternative Bank, with Lotus close behind.
  • Feature phone or unreliable data: Lotus (*5045#) or TAJBank's USSD tiers.
  • Far from any branch: TAJBank's agent network is the sector's deepest.
  • Online subscriptions and international payments: Jaiz's published card limits and subscription support, or Lotus's virtual dollar card.
  • Bulk business payments: Lotus's SME collection strings and free POS offer (terms apply), or Summit's bulk payments on the business variant.

Frequently asked questions

Do non-interest banks charge for USSD transactions?

Industry-standard USSD session fees generally apply across Nigerian banking, and the non-interest banks do not publish exceptions. None publishes a full digital tariff, so confirm session and transfer charges at onboarding.

Which app can open an account fastest?

AltBank and Lotus both onboard individuals in-app with a BVN and ID, typically same-day. Tiered accounts (TAJBank Tier 1) open with minimal documentation but cap balances until KYC upgrades.

Can I pay for Netflix or Spotify with a halal bank card?

Yes. Jaiz explicitly lists Netflix, Spotify, Microsoft, Google Play, Starlink, Prime and Uber among supported subscriptions on its Verve card, within its N2,000,000 web limit. Lotus's virtual dollar card covers dollar-denominated services. Whether a given subscription is a permissible spend is on you, not the card.

Are agent deposits as safe as branch deposits?

Agent transactions settle into your NDIC-insured account at the licensed bank; the agent is a channel, not a counterparty. Use recognised agents (TAJBank-branded, AltBank Wakeel), collect receipts or SMS confirmations, and reconcile in the app.

Is digital-only Summit Bank usable outside Abuja?

Its digital channels work anywhere, but its regional licence covers a state list the bank has not published, and physical service is verified only in Abuja. Ask Summit directly whether it can fully serve your state before relying on it; established alternatives are compared on our bank accounts page.

Which USSD codes do the non-interest banks use?

Lotus publishes *5045#, which works on any phone without data and covers transfers and account services; Jaiz and TAJBank both run USSD banking with their current strings published on their websites and in-branch. USSD is the channel that keeps these banks usable on feature phones and in low-connectivity areas, and transactions ride the same NIBSS rails as app transfers.

Can I open an account through USSD alone?

USSD is primarily a transaction channel; account opening runs best through the apps, online portals or branches, where document upload and BVN verification happen. Lower-tier accounts open with minimal friction through those routes, and USSD then handles day-to-day use. If you are helping a family member with a feature phone, open the account via app or branch on their behalf-with-them, then hand over the USSD string.

Do the apps handle bills, airtime and statements?

The published feature sets cover the standard stack: transfers, airtime and bill payments, statements and card controls, with Jaiz adding cardless withdrawal and free monthly e-statements and AltBank building its entire proposition app-first. Feature depth varies by bank and release cycle, so check the current app store listing for the specific capability you need before choosing on this basis.

What happens if an agent or USSD transaction fails?

Failed transactions on NIBSS rails reverse to the source account, usually automatically and occasionally after a dispute window. Keep the SMS alert or app record as evidence, report unresolved reversals to the bank's support channel with the transaction reference, and escalate to the CBN's consumer protection channels if the bank stalls. The consumer protections are identical to conventional banking; the rails are the same.
