Working in a conventional bank is not haram in itself; the role is what matters. Positions that create, document, sell or collect interest-bearing contracts, such as loan officers, credit analysts, treasury dealers in bonds and bills, and relationship managers whose targets are loan sales, fall within the prohibition in the well-known hadith that curses the one who consumes riba, the one who pays it, the one who writes it and the two who witness it. Positions that do not touch the interest contract, such as security, facilities, most IT, human resources and customer service on non-interest products, are permitted by the majority of contemporary scholars, with a minority counselling avoidance. The salary follows the role. Our is-it-halal hub sets out the general method, and the second half of this page lists where the non-interest jobs actually are.

The text that decides the question

The ruling rests on a narration in Sahih Muslim in which the Prophet, peace be upon him, cursed four people in relation to riba: the one who consumes it, the one who pays it, the one who records it and the two who witness it, adding that 'they are all equal'. Scholars take two things from this. First, the prohibition is not confined to the lender and borrower; it reaches the people who make the transaction happen. Second, it names specific functions, writing and witnessing, rather than everyone within earshot. That is why the classical and contemporary discussion focuses on what a given employee does, not on whether the employer's business includes riba. A conventional Nigerian bank earns fees, commissions, foreign exchange income and service charges as well as interest, and employs thousands of people who never see a loan agreement.

The principle that follows is assistance in sin. Qur'an 5:2 instructs believers to help one another in righteousness and not in sin and transgression. Scholars grade assistance by directness: writing the interest clause into a contract is direct; cleaning the office where it was signed is remote. Most fatwa bodies in the Muslim world and most Nigerian scholars who have addressed the question draw the line between direct and remote assistance, and the table below reflects that line as it is usually applied to Nigerian bank roles.

Role by role: what is prohibited, what is permitted, what is disputed

Role in a conventional bankMainstream positionWhy
Loan or credit officer, credit analyst, recovery officer on interest loansProhibitedDirectly creates, documents or collects the riba contract
Treasury or fixed income dealer (T-bills, bonds, interbank placements)ProhibitedTrades interest-bearing instruments for the bank's own book
Relationship manager with loan or overdraft sales targetsProhibitedSells and arranges the interest contract
Teller or cashierDisputed; most permitHandles deposits, withdrawals and transfers; does not write the contract, though may process interest postings
Internal audit, compliance, risk reportingDisputed; many permitOversight rather than contracting, but reviews and certifies interest income
IT, software, cybersecurity, card operationsPermitted by majorityInfrastructure serves all bank activity, most of it permissible
Human resources, legal (non-credit), marketing of non-interest productsPermittedNo part in the riba contract
Security, drivers, cleaners, facilitiesPermittedRemote assistance only
Any role in a licensed non-interest bank or windowPermittedNo interest contracts exist to assist

Two notes on the disputed rows. A teller in a Nigerian bank mainly processes cash and transfers, and the majority view permits the job, but a teller whose duties include posting interest or opening loan accounts moves closer to the prohibited column; ask what the role actually requires before accepting. Auditors and compliance officers are in a similar position: reviewing accounts that contain interest is not the same as writing the contract, and many scholars permit it, but a role whose core output is certifying interest income for the regulator sits uncomfortably, and an officer with the option of moving to the bank's non-interest window should take it.

Is the salary haram?

The salary takes the ruling of the work. If the work is prohibited, the pay for it is unlawful earning, and a person who comes to that realisation should leave as soon as a lawful alternative can be found and, in the view of most scholars, give away any portion of past earnings they can attribute to the prohibited work once their own needs are met; there is no sin for earnings taken in genuine ignorance. If the work is permitted, the salary is lawful even though the employer's income includes interest, because the employee is paid for permissible labour out of a mixed pool, and the majority of scholars hold that a wage from a mixed-income employer is lawful where the specific work is lawful. The strictest view treats all income from a riba-dealing institution as tainted and advises leaving regardless of role; it is a respected minority view, and someone who can act on it without hardship earns reward by doing so.

Hardship matters. Nigerian scholars generally recognise that a person with dependants, no savings and no offer in hand is not obliged to resign on the spot from a disputed role. The obligation is to stop doing the prohibited part of the job if that can be arranged, to search in earnest, and to leave when a lawful post appears, not to wait until the lawful post is more comfortable. Someone in a clearly prohibited role, such as a loan officer, should treat the search as urgent, and may legitimately request an internal transfer to operations, IT or the non-interest window while searching. The question of what to do with interest already received, including on a staff account, is handled in our treasury bills verdict, and the same disposal rule applies.

The non-interest route: where the jobs are

Nigeria now has enough licensed non-interest institutions that 'there was nowhere else to work' is no longer true for a finance professional. The Central Bank has licensed four full-fledged non-interest commercial banks, Jaiz Bank, TAJBank, Lotus Bank and The Alternative Bank, plus Summit Bank, several non-interest microfinance banks and non-interest windows inside conventional banks. Around them sit the takaful operators, the Shariah fund managers (Lotus Capital, First Asset Management's FBN Halal Fund, ARM's Sharia funds, United Capital, Stanbic IBTC's Imaan Fund), every PFA's Fund VI desk, the NGX Non-Interest Finance Board, and the Central Bank's own non-interest supervision and Financial Regulation Advisory Council of Experts. We checked the careers pages of the four banks on 20 September 2026.

  • The Alternative Bank (altbank.ng/careers): the only one of the four with a live list of named vacancies. It is 'expanding our Sales team' with Branch Manager and Relationship Manager roles across commercial, institutional, public sector, wealth, corporate and retail banking, and lists specialist posts including Corporate Financial Advisor, Operations and Business Compliance Officer, Branch Conduct and Compliance Monitoring Officer, Regional Recovery Officer, Portfolio Analysis and Reporting Analyst, Core Banking Operations Officer, Card and Switching Analyst, Structured Trade Analyst and Regional Agric Finance and Export Officer. Stated requirements for the sales roles: a bachelor's degree in a relevant field, a valid NYSC certificate and sales experience.
  • TAJBank (tajbank.com/careers and /job-listings): no open roles listed; the page says 'Watch this space for openings available in our world'. The bank runs a TAJBank Training Academy and an internship application route, which is the realistic entry point for a graduate.
  • Lotus Bank (lotusbank.com/career): 'No opening yet!' on the open positions section when fetched, with a general invitation to apply.
  • Jaiz Bank (jaizbankplc.com): the site navigation we fetched had no careers link and the careers address returned an error page. Jaiz describes itself as a national bank 'owned by over 26,000 shareholders spread over the six geopolitical zones', so vacancies exist; apply through the contact channels on the site or the bank's LinkedIn page.

The AltBank list shows what a non-interest bank actually hires for: the same compliance, IT, cards, operations and relationship roles as a conventional bank, with product knowledge of murabaha, ijarah and mudarabah layered on top. A credit analyst in a conventional bank is, in skills terms, a financing analyst in a non-interest bank. Our profiles of Jaiz Bank, TAJBank, Lotus Bank and The Alternative Bank describe each institution's products, which is the preparation an interviewer will expect.

Windows inside conventional banks: a halfway house

Several conventional banks hold CBN non-interest window licences, and The Alternative Bank itself grew out of Sterling Bank's window before becoming a standalone bank; one of its current job descriptions still refers to serving 'Sterling bank customers' on shared card infrastructure. A window is a ring-fenced unit with its own Shariah advisory committee and segregated funds. For an employee, moving into the window means the products you sell and document are non-interest even though the group's income is mixed, which resolves the role question for most scholars. It does not satisfy the strict minority, who object to the parent's business as a whole. If you are already employed by a bank with a window, an internal transfer is the fastest lawful move available, and it keeps your pension, grade and service record intact. Our comparison of windows and full banks explains how the ring-fencing works, and this assessment of whether Nigerian non-interest banks are genuinely Islamic is honest about the limits.

Beyond banks: takaful, funds, pensions and the regulators

A banker's skills transfer to four other non-interest employers. Takaful operators (Noor Takaful, Jaiz Takaful, Salam Takaful, Hilal Takaful and Crown Takaful) hire underwriters, claims staff, actuaries and sales agents; our comparison of the operators describes each. Shariah fund managers hire analysts, dealers and client service staff; Lotus Capital alone runs four funds including the N48.31 billion Lotus Halal Fixed Income Fund. Every PFA must offer Fund VI, the non-interest RSA fund, and needs people who understand sukuk and screened equities. And the regulators, led by the CBN's Financial Regulation Advisory Council of Experts, need staff who understand the contracts. Shariah audit and advisory, for those with Islamic law training, is the scarcest skill in the sector.

Pay is the question everyone asks and nobody publishes. None of the four banks' career pages states salary bands, and we will not guess. What can be said is that non-interest banks compete for the same graduates as the conventional banks, and that TAJBank's own releases report N11.3 billion profit before tax for 2023 and shareholders' funds above N53 billion, which is not the profile of an employer that cannot pay.

A practical plan if you are in a conventional bank today

  • Classify your own role honestly using the table above. If it is in the prohibited column, treat moving as urgent; if disputed, treat it as a firm medium-term goal; if permitted, you may stay, but a move still removes the doubt.
  • Ask for an internal transfer now: to the non-interest window if your bank has one, otherwise to operations, IT, HR or any desk that does not originate or sell credit. Most banks grant lateral moves more readily than people assume.
  • Apply to all four non-interest banks, Summit Bank and the non-interest microfinance banks at once, not one at a time. AltBank's list is live; TAJBank and Lotus accept speculative applications; Jaiz is reachable through its contact channels.
  • Learn the contracts. Murabaha, ijarah, mudarabah, musharakah, istisna and wakalah appear in every non-interest job description; read the product pages of the four banks and the CBN's non-interest framework before interviews.
  • Set a date. Decide the month by which you will have left a prohibited role whatever happens, and give sadaqah from your current pay while you wait, as many scholars advise for income earned under doubt.
  • Do not resign into nothing if you have dependants. Scholars distinguish between sinning by choice and bearing hardship under necessity; the obligation is sincere, time-bound effort, not destitution.

The decision

If you are a loan officer, credit analyst or treasury dealer in a conventional bank, your work is within the prohibition and you should be actively moving, starting with an internal transfer request this month and external applications to the non-interest banks, which do hire exactly your skills. If you are in IT, operations, HR, security or customer service, the majority of scholars permit your job and your salary; a move to a non-interest institution is better, not obligatory. If you are a graduate choosing a first employer, the question answers itself: the four non-interest banks, the takaful operators and the Shariah fund managers will take you, and AltBank has named vacancies open now. Banking as a profession is not the problem. Interest is, and in Nigeria in 2026 you can do the profession without it. For the full picture of the institutions, see our bank accounts hub. Frequently asked questions

Is it haram to work as a bank teller?

Most contemporary scholars permit it. A teller processes cash, deposits, withdrawals and transfers, and does not write or sell the interest contract named in the hadith. The caution is about duties: if the role includes opening loan accounts or posting interest, it edges toward the prohibited category. Ask for the job description before accepting, and prefer the same role in one of Nigeria's four non-interest banks if you can get it.

Is a bank salary haram money?

The salary follows the role. Pay for prohibited work, such as originating interest loans, is unlawful earning that most scholars say should be given away once your needs are met and the job left. Pay for permitted work in the same bank is lawful, because you are compensated for permissible labour from a mixed pool of fee, service and interest income. A minority view treats all such pay as tainted; acting on it is praiseworthy where possible.

Can I work in the IT department of a conventional bank?

The majority of scholars permit it. IT infrastructure serves everything the bank does, most of which, such as payments, transfers, cards and record keeping, is permissible, and the IT staff member neither writes nor witnesses an interest contract. Building a system whose sole purpose is to compute and post interest is closer to the line, and some scholars advise declining that specific assignment. A move to a non-interest bank, where AltBank currently lists core banking and card roles, removes the doubt.

Do Nigerian Islamic banks have job vacancies?

Yes, though they are not always advertised. When we checked on 20 September 2026, The Alternative Bank listed named vacancies for branch managers, relationship managers and specialist compliance, IT, trade and agric finance roles, requiring a bachelor's degree and a valid NYSC certificate. TAJBank's job listings page showed no open roles but offers an internship route and a training academy; Lotus Bank's page showed no openings; Jaiz Bank's careers page did not load.

What should I do if I cannot leave my bank job immediately?

Stop doing the prohibited part of the role where you can, request a transfer to operations, IT or the bank's non-interest window, apply to all the non-interest institutions at once, set a firm leaving date, and give sadaqah from your pay in the meantime. Scholars distinguish between someone who stays by choice and someone bearing necessity while making sincere effort; the second is not sinning by remaining temporarily.

Is working for a conventional bank's Islamic window halal?

For most scholars, yes. A CBN-licensed window is ring-fenced, with its own Shariah advisory committee and segregated funds, so the products you sell and document are non-interest. The strict minority objects because the parent bank deals in interest. If you are already in a conventional bank with a window, an internal transfer is the fastest lawful move and keeps your grade and pension intact.

Quick Answer

Is working in a bank haram? Roles that write or sell interest contracts are prohibited; most support roles are not. Salary, and Nigeria's non-interest route.
