Lotus Bank is what happens when Nigeria's halal asset management pioneer decides to build a bank. Founded by Hajara Adeola, who also founded Lotus Capital, it received its CBN non-interest licence on 17 June 2021 and opened on 7 July 2021 with three Lagos branches, the first non-interest bank launched from the south. Growth has been rapid: a balance sheet of roughly N30 billion in 2021 grew to an audited N212 billion by end-2023 and past N350 billion by October 2024 on management figures, with customers doubling to about 500,000 and 55 locations across 17 states. Product details below come from our crawl of the bank's pages on 4 August 2026.

The fee story is real
Every Lotus deposit account carries zero opening balance, zero maintenance charge and zero minimum balance: the current account, the Savers account, the premium tier, the domiciliary accounts and the business suite. The current account adds a free cheque book on request, unlimited withdrawals and deposits, the first three withdrawals each cycle on other banks' ATMs free, and USSD banking on *5045# that works on a feature phone. For a full-service licensed bank rather than a fintech wallet, this is the cheapest halal banking package in Nigeria on paper. The caveat: Lotus publishes no tariff document, so incidental fees (transfers, card issuance, SMS alerts, FX spreads) are only discoverable at a branch.
The Savers account and an honest flag
LOTUS Savers is the bank's headline retail savings account, designated Mudaraba on the product page header, meaning deposits should join a pool invested in Shariah-compliant trade, lease and partnership assets with returns shared on a pre-agreed ratio. But the same page's benefits list states that no profit is shared, directly contradicting the header, and no rates, ratios or pool disclosures appear anywhere on the site (verified 4 August 2026). Either the copy is wrong or the account behaves as safe custody in practice. We flag it rather than resolve it: if the return matters to you, get the current sharing ratio in writing from the branch before funding, and treat any profit as upside. The same header-versus-benefits contradiction appears on the domiciliary savings variant.
The rest of the shelf
- Premium Current and Premium Savings: Qard current plus savings accepted under Al-Wadiah safe custody, with a free Black Card for the first year, airport lounge access, private jet charter discounts and a dedicated advisory team. Qualifying criteria and year-two card pricing are unpublished.
- Domiciliary accounts: USD, GBP and EUR in current and savings variants, zero opening balance, international FX transfers from online banking. No FX fee schedule or spread disclosure is published.
- Salary Account: a Qard account that unlocks Lotus's payday finance, structured as Murabaha purchases and Ijara services rather than cash advances at interest, plus ATM-card purchase limits at select partner stores. Markup rates unpublished.
- Business suite: SME current and savings, corporate current and call accounts, and a Cluster account purpose-built for mosques, cooperatives, schools and associations, all zero-fee, with free POS terminals for qualifying SMEs (terms apply) and a dedicated USSD collection string.
Financing access
Opening a Lotus account is the gateway to the bank's financing shelf: LOTUS Rides auto finance (up to 80% of vehicle value, five years for new cars, four for used, payments capped near 33% of net take-home), LOTUS Homes (the bank's own pages conflict: up to 20 years and 70% financing on one page, 10 years and 80% on another, both live as of 4 August 2026), education finance covering up to 100% of invoiced fees over 24 months paid directly to the school, and appliance Murabaha through partnerships including FOUANI and Samsung. No markup rates are published for any of these; every rate is described as competitive and set at the branch.
Governance and the disclosure scorecard
Lotus names a three-member Advisory Committee of Experts: Shaykh Haytham Tamim (chairman), Professor Ahmad Murtala and Dr. Marjan Binti Muhammad, and publishes contract-level explanations of Murabaha, Musharakah, Mudarabah, Ijarah, Istisna and Salam on its Islamic banking page. It commits to no cash loans and no financing of alcohol, gambling, arms or speculation. What it does not publish: ACE annual compliance reports, product fatwas, profit rates or sharing ratios. A bank whose chairman built Lotus Capital on published fund fact sheets can do better, and the Savers-page contradiction is the kind of error a three-scholar board should catch.
Who Lotus fits
Lotus is the strongest pick for fee-sensitive households, southern customers who want a non-interest bank with local roots, and community organizations: the Cluster account answers a genuine need, since mosque and cooperative funds sitting at conventional banks quietly accrue riba someone must purify. Its 55 locations across 17 states still leave large parts of the South-East and South-South thin, so check branch presence for your city. Yield-focused savers should pair a Lotus transaction account with a documented-return product elsewhere, such as FGN sukuk or a Shariah fund; see the comparison on HalalWallet's bank accounts page.
Frequently asked questions
Is Lotus Bank really free to bank with?
The published account-level answer is yes: zero opening balance, zero maintenance charge, zero minimum balance on every deposit account, plus a free first cheque book and three free other-bank ATM withdrawals. The unpublished answer lives in the tariff document Lotus does not post: transfer fees, card fees and FX spreads. Ask for the full schedule at onboarding.
Does LOTUS Savers pay profit or not?
The bank's own page is contradictory: a Mudaraba header and a benefits list stating no profit is shared (verified 4 August 2026). Get the answer in writing from a branch. Open the account for the fee-free banking and financing access; do not open it assuming a yield the bank has not documented.
Is Lotus Bank insured and properly licensed?
Yes. Lotus holds a national CBN non-interest banking licence and its deposits carry NDIC insurance. The CBN's 2024 recapitalisation requires N20 billion capital for national non-interest banks with a March 2026 deadline, a bar all national players have been working toward.
What is the *5045# USSD service?
Lotus's USSD banking string. It handles transfers, airtime, data and balance checks without a smartphone or data connection, which matters for market traders and feature-phone users. The mobile app adds account opening, cardless withdrawals, e-statements and cheque book requests.
Can non-Muslims bank with Lotus?
Yes. Non-interest banking is a product structure, not a membership test. Lotus markets on ethics and zero fees, and its screening (no alcohol, gambling, arms or speculative financing) plus genuinely free accounts appeal well beyond Muslim customers.
Does Lotus finance cars and homes for account holders?
Yes, and the shelf is broad by sector standards: LOTUS Rides finances up to 80% of a vehicle's value over up to five years for new cars and four for used; LOTUS Homes covers home purchase, though the bank's own pages state conflicting terms (20 years and 70% financing in one place, 10 years and 80% in another), so get your specific offer in writing; and education finance covers 100% of invoiced school fees over 24 months, paid directly to the institution. An active Lotus account is the gateway to all of it.

What is the Cluster account?
A purpose-built group account for mosques, cooperatives, schools, associations and clubs, carrying the same zero-fee promise as Lotus's personal accounts: no opening balance, no maintenance charge, no minimum balance. Community funds are exactly the money that should not sit earning riba at a conventional bank, and no other Nigerian institution publishes an equivalent product. Treasurers still need written confirmation of signatory rules and any transaction charges, since Lotus publishes no tariff document.
