Lagos is where the southern half of Nigeria's non-interest banking story is being written. The products are the same nationwide (the banks price and structure identically wherever you open the account), so what actually differs in Lagos is presence, priority and history: which institutions are headquartered here, where the physical network is dense, and which local institutions exist nowhere else. Here is the Lagos picture, from our provider research verified 4 August 2026.

Lotus: the bank that started here
Lotus Bank opened on 7 July 2021 with three Lagos branches, the first full non-interest bank launched from the south, and its Victoria Island headquarters remains the sector's southern anchor. Its founder Hajara Adeola built Lotus Capital, Nigeria's pioneer halal asset manager, in Lagos years earlier, so the institutional DNA is local. For Lagosians this shows up practically: the density of Lotus's 55 locations across 17 states is strongest in its home region, its zero-fee accounts (no opening balance, no maintenance charge, no minimum balance) suit the city's enormous salaried and self-employed population, and its Cluster account gives Lagos's mosques, cooperatives and school associations zero-fee group banking. The *5045# USSD string covers the city's feature-phone economy.
AltBank: headquartered in Ilupeju, built for app-first Lagos
The Alternative Bank's registered address is 20 Marina and its operating headquarters sits on Ikorodu Road, Ilupeju; it launched simultaneously in Lagos, Abuja and Kano in October 2023. Its deliberately light physical model (20 branches nationally, plus Wakeel agent shops, kiosks and Altboxes) is calibrated for a customer who banks by app, which describes much of working Lagos. AltSave's zero minimum balance and AltCheck's no-withdrawal-charges current account compete directly with the fintech wallets Lagosians already use, with the difference that deposits sit at a licensed non-interest bank with a published, signed Shariah compliance report in its audited accounts.
Jaiz and TAJBank in Lagos
Jaiz Bank, headquartered in Abuja with 51 branches nationally, maintains Lagos branches serving the city's large Muslim commercial community; its strength here is product depth (the widest halal financing shelf: home finance on diminishing Musharakah, Murabaha auto and consumer lines, Ijarah service finance for school fees and rent). TAJBank's Lagos presence rides less on branches than on its 13,000-plus agent network and digital channels, plus the one product no Lagos competitor matches: retail sukuk investing from N10,000 with no fees. Both banks' accounts, cards and USSD work identically in Lagos as anywhere.
The Lagos exclusive: Al-Barakah
Lagos hosts the one Islamic-identity microfinance institution in Nigeria's south-west: Al-Barakah Microfinance Bank, operating from Jibowu, Yaba since around 2010 and routinely described in academic research as Nigeria's first Islamic microfinance bank. Its shelf is purpose-built for the city's traders: savings and current accounts, fixed ethical investment, Hajj and Umrah savings plans, festival target savings and Baby Bond child savings, with cooperative-channel financing. The honest caveats we publish everywhere apply here with force: Al-Barakah holds a conventional unit MFB licence, not the CBN's non-interest class, publishes no Shariah board and no rates, and its single location is the whole network. It is a community institution with an Islamic identity rather than a governed Islamic bank; NDIC-insured, useful for target savings, but confirm the contract governing your deposit at the branch in writing.
How a Lagosian should choose
- Salaried, app-first, fee-averse: Lotus or AltBank as the primary account; both onboard digitally and cost nothing to hold.
- Trader at Balogun, Mile 12, Oshodi or anywhere with an association: an AltBank Social Mobilization facility (published 9.5% per annum through associations) or Lotus Traders Coins, with daily takings deposited through agents.
- Household planning finance: Jaiz for the deepest financing shelf, including home finance with 20% minimum equity over up to 7 years.
- Investor: TAJBank's sukuk service from N10,000, or Lotus Capital's funds next door to the bank.
- Community treasurer (mosque, cooperative, school association): Lotus's Cluster account, built precisely for you.
Frequently asked questions
Are rates or fees different in Lagos than elsewhere?
No. Product structures, published fees and contracts are national at every bank we track; what varies by city is branch density, agent coverage and cash service convenience. That is why our city guides focus on presence rather than pretending local products exist.
Which non-interest bank has the most Lagos branches?
None of the banks publishes a precise per-city branch list on its site. Lotus's network is southern-weighted with 55 locations in 17 states nationally; AltBank concentrates its light footprint in Lagos, Abuja and Kano; Jaiz's 51 branches skew north but include Lagos. Check each bank's branch locator for your neighbourhood.
Is Al-Barakah safe to save with?
It is CBN-licensed as a unit MFB, NDIC-insured, and has operated for a decade and a half, surviving the July 2026 revocation wave that closed 46 MFB licences. What it lacks is published Shariah governance and any published rates. For target savings with a community institution, reasonable; for large balances, the commercial non-interest banks offer stronger verification.
Can Lagos churches or non-Muslim cooperatives use these banks?
Yes. Non-interest banking has no religious test, and Lotus's Cluster account explicitly serves religious bodies, cooperatives, schools and associations generally. Zero-fee group banking is attractive to any treasurer.
Where do I compare all my Lagos options?
Our bank accounts page compares every institution and account we track, and the complete Nigeria guide covers the national picture.
Where are Lotus's branches concentrated?
Lotus runs about 55 locations across 17 states as of its November 2024 published figures, with the network weighted toward Lagos and the south-west, its home market since the 2021 launch. For Lagosians this makes Lotus the branch-access pick among the non-interest banks, alongside its zero-fee account pricing. The locator on the bank's site carries current addresses.
Can I bank fully with Jaiz or TAJBank in Lagos?
Yes. Both hold national licences and serve Lagos through branches, agents, apps, USSD and cards; Jaiz's network is north-weighted but its Lagos presence is real, and TAJBank's digital-first model works identically everywhere. A Lagosian choosing them gets the same products as an Abuja or Kano customer, with branch density the only variable.
What should a Balogun or Mile 12 trader choose?
The trader stack: a tiered account opened with market documents, agents for cash-in near the stall, USSD for transfers, and the association as the route to financing. Al-Barakah in Yaba adds a community-institution option with target-savings products built for traders, subject to the contract-verification caveat in our review. Lotus's Cluster account suits the association's own pool.
Do Lagos digital platforms offer halal savings alternatives?
The investing side of the ecosystem is genuinely strong: SEC-registered Shariah funds accept from N5,000, digital halal investment platforms operate nationally, and FGN sukuk subscriptions run through any placement agent. These are growth vehicles rather than bank accounts, and they complement rather than replace an insured deposit; our investing pages map the options.

Is Lagos getting more non-interest branches?
The trajectory says yes: Lotus grew to roughly 55 locations across 17 states within three and a half years of its 2021 launch, and AltBank keeps adding kiosks and Altboxes around its Ilupeju base. No bank publishes a forward expansion map, so the practical advice stands: check each locator for your part of the city today, and remember that apps, USSD and agents already deliver full service anywhere in Lagos regardless of branch geography.
