Opening a non-interest bank account in Nigeria is procedurally identical to opening a conventional one: same BVN requirement, same tiered KYC regime, same documents. What differs is the contract you are signing, and a little preparation ensures you sign the right one. This guide covers the requirements as published by Jaiz Bank, TAJBank, Lotus Bank and The Alternative Bank, verified 4 August 2026, plus the questions worth asking before you sign anything.

The BVN comes first
The Bank Verification Number is Nigeria's biometric banking identity, and every meaningful account requires one. If you already bank anywhere in Nigeria, you have a BVN; dial the standard USSD check or ask your current bank. If you are newly banked, any bank branch, including the non-interest banks, can enrol you: fingerprints, photograph and basic details. Diaspora Nigerians can enrol through approved overseas channels. Expect the BVN to be requested on every application in this guide; TAJBank, for instance, lists BVN explicitly among its domiciliary account requirements alongside two references, valid ID and a utility bill.
The three KYC tiers, in practice
The CBN's tiered know-your-customer regime exists so that documentation poverty does not lock people out of banking, and TAJBank's tiered savings account is the clearest published implementation in the non-interest space. Tier 1 opens with minimal documentation but caps single deposits at N50,000 and cumulative daily balance at N300,000. Tier 2 raises the caps to N100,000 per deposit and N500,000 balance. Tier 3 requires full documentation, has zero opening balance, and accepts cheque deposits up to N2 million. All tiers get mobile, USSD and online banking plus a debit card. The practical path for a newly banked person: open Tier 1 today with next to nothing, transact, and upgrade as documents come together.
Documents by account type
- Basic savings (Tier 3) or current account: BVN, valid government ID (national ID, passport, driver's licence or voter's card), proof of address (utility bill or tenancy agreement, usually within three months), passport photographs, and a completed opening form. Lotus and AltBank support app-based onboarding for individuals.
- Payroll or salary account: the above plus employer documentation. TAJBank's payroll account requires an employer introduction letter on company letterhead and a staff identity card. Lotus onboards salary accounts through employer partnerships.
- Children's accounts: the guardian's full KYC plus the child's birth certificate and passport photographs of both. Jaiz's Kids Account and TAJBank's Emerald Kiddies (N2,000 minimum opening) both run guardian-operated trust structures.
- Domiciliary accounts: heavier by design. TAJBank asks for two passport photographs, valid ID, a current utility bill or tenancy agreement, BVN, two suitable references and the opening form. Jaiz and Lotus publish lighter requirement lists but apply documentation at the branch.
- Term deposits: an existing account at the bank plus the placement instruction. Minimums are published: N500,000 at Jaiz and TAJBank, N1,000,000 at Summit.
Choosing the right contract at the counter
This is the step conventional guides skip. When the officer asks which account you want, you are choosing a contract. Qard and Wadiah accounts (all current accounts, TAJBank's basic savings, Lotus's premium savings) guarantee your principal and pay nothing. Mudarabah and Musharakah accounts (Jaiz savings, TAJBank Partnership, Summit savings) share real investment profit and carry investment risk. Ask three questions before signing: which contract governs this account, what is the current profit-sharing ratio in writing if it is profit-bearing, and what fees apply beyond what the website states. Banks answer these routinely when asked and almost never volunteer them.
Costs and minimums, as published
Zero-cost entry is genuinely available. Lotus advertises zero opening balance, zero maintenance charge and zero minimum balance on every account. TAJBank's payroll and Tier 3 savings open with zero balance. AltSave has zero minimum balance. Jaiz states no account maintenance charge on its current account and does not publish opening minimums. The gaps are transaction-level fees: transfer charges, card issuance and SMS alerts are mostly unpublished across the sector, so request the full tariff at onboarding and keep a copy.
Frequently asked questions
Can I open an account without a utility bill in my name?
At Tier 1, generally yes: minimal documentation is the point, in exchange for tight deposit and balance caps. For Tier 3 and current accounts, banks typically accept a tenancy agreement where a utility bill is unavailable; TAJBank's lists name either. Ask the specific branch, as acceptance practice varies.
How long does opening take?
App-based onboarding at Lotus or AltBank can produce a working account the same day for individuals with a BVN and ID. Branch-based opening with full KYC typically completes in one visit plus verification time. Domiciliary accounts take longer because of the reference requirement.
Do I need to be Muslim to open one?
No. Non-interest banks serve all customers, and their zero-fee structures attract plenty of non-Muslim users. No bank in this guide applies any religious test.
Can diaspora Nigerians open accounts remotely?
Partially. A BVN is required and can be obtained through approved overseas enrolment channels; AltBank and TAJBank both court diaspora customers with domiciliary products, and AltBank pairs its AltCurrency account with a diaspora home finance line. Expect additional documentation and, in some cases, an in-country step. See our diaspora banking guide for the full picture.
Which bank should a first-time customer choose?
For minimal-document entry, TAJBank's Tier 1. For zero-fee full service, Lotus. For app-first onboarding with strong governance, AltBank. For the widest branch network and product depth, Jaiz. We compare all of them on our bank accounts page.
Can I open more than one account at the same bank?
Yes, and the standard configuration is exactly that: a Qard current account for daily transactions plus a Mudarabah savings account for the growing balance, both under one profile and app login. Term deposits then sit on top as separate placements. The pairing costs nothing at the zero-fee banks and keeps your transactional and savings money in the right contracts.
Do I need a minimum deposit to open?
At Lotus, no: zero opening balance across its deposit shelf is published policy. TAJBank publishes a N2,000 minimum on its Emerald Kiddies account, while most other products across the sector do not publish opening minimums at all, which usually means modest but branch-confirmed figures. Tier 1 accounts everywhere are designed to open light; the caps (N50,000 per deposit, N300,000 balance) bind before any minimum does.
What if my BVN details do not match my ID?
Fix the mismatch before applying, not during. Name spellings, dates of birth and phone numbers that differ between your BVN record and your ID are the most common cause of stalled account opening, and the bank cannot override them. Corrections run through BVN enrollment centres. Once your records agree, opening at any non-interest bank is typically same-day for lower tiers.
Can a business open a non-interest account?
Yes. Registered businesses need CAC documentation, a board resolution where applicable, directors' BVNs and IDs, and proof of business address. Lotus, AltBank, Jaiz and TAJBank all run business current accounts, with Lotus publishing the most aggressive pricing (zero fees across its SME and corporate tiers). Our business banking guide covers the full landscape, including the financing that becomes available once account history builds.

Can I upgrade my KYC tier later?
Yes, and the system is designed for it: start at Tier 1 with minimal documents, then present the fuller documentation set at a branch or through the app to lift the deposit and balance caps progressively. Nothing about the account number or history changes; only the limits move. Most customers who start light upgrade within months as the caps start to bind.
